Does buying in bulk actually save you money?

Plenty of shops put "bulk" on a bigger bag and charge you proportionally more for it. We'd rather just show you the sums, because for most of our bulk lines the saving is real and worth having.

Take Large Pig Ears. Bought singly they're £1.90 each. The 10-pack is £16, which is £1.60 an ear, a saving of £3, or a bit under 16%.

Buffalo Ears are a better example still. Singly they're £2.50. The pack of ten is £18, so £1.80 each. That's £7 saved across the pack, around 28% off.

The 1kg bags work the same way. Beef Tripe at £14 a kilo, Beef Skin at £15, Lamb Skin and Goat Skin at £16, Puffed Chicken Feet at £15, all of them come out well under the price of buying the equivalent weight in ones and twos.

There's a second saving people forget about: delivery. Standard UK shipping is free over £30 on parcels up to 2kg, and free over £50 on parcels from 2-10kg. A bulk order usually clears one of those thresholds on its own, so you're not paying postage on top.

Bulk isn't right for everything, mind. If you've never given your dog fish skins before, don't start with a kilo of them, buy one, see what they make of it, then commit. The savings only count if the treats actually get eaten.

Store dried chews somewhere cool, dark and properly sealed and they'll keep for months. A big bag in a warm kitchen cupboard with the top rolled over is how you end up throwing half of it away.
